Studio One mono phase: Mix Engine FX, Transform to mono, polarity, AU/VST3 vs spectral repair
PreSonus Studio One console headphones and Mix Engine FX can hide cancel. Transform to mono (or Master mono fold), polarity invert, small delay align, and honest stereo FX come first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds. Distinct DAW niche (not folk-instrument pages). Cross-links: polarity, vs time-align, null-test, when-not.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for polarity invert, Utility mono, or delay align. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.
What Studio One mono-phase failure sounds like
- Mix Engine FX looks huge, Transform to mono thins. Console-style Mix Engine processing shimmers in headphones, then mono fold eats Mid body.
- Stereo FX Channels without a mono proof. Reverb and delay Returns fight dry when you Transform the Master or bus to mono.
- Polarity never flipped on dual paths. Dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel buses cancel until you invert one path.
- AU / VST3 stereo imagers on Groups. Third-party wideners feel wide in Studio One; phone and club mono fold thin the kick or vocal chest.
- Fine in console headphones, broken on export or livestream. Same destinations as YouTube / social mono and null-test workflow.
Fast Studio One mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- On the Master (or a dedicated Monitor bus), Transform to mono or insert a mono-fold utility. Toggle it; do not leave it on.
- A/B critical Buses, FX Channels, and Mix Engine FX with mono engaged. Note kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest, stereo return bloom.
- Solo pairs that share energy: kick vs bass bus, vocal vs stereo FX Channel, layered Event stacks.
- Optional: watch a correlation meter on Master, then with mono off so you hear stereo again.
Order of operations in Studio One (before spectral phase rotation)
1. Polarity invert on one path
Use Channel polarity / Phase invert on one path of a dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel bus when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.
2. Small delay align (not Haas width)
Nudge the secondary Event or use a short delay (samples/ms) to match the hero. Do not use Haas L/R delay as "width" before mono check. Cousin: vs time-align.
3. Transform to mono honestly
Transform to mono (or Master mono fold) is a check and a destination fold, not a repair. If mono kills the part, fix polarity and routing first. Do not "rescue" with more stereo Mix Engine color.
4. Mix Engine FX and FX Channels
Mix Engine FX and stereo FX Channels often cause Mid cancel when summed with dry. Mono-check Master with FX muted vs open. Prefer mono-safe lows on critical returns. Related: stereo reverb mono.
5. AU / VST3 phase and format hygiene
PHIXER and other AU/VST3 plugs sit on stereo inserts like any Studio One effect. Prove latency/compensation with bypass A/B. Do not stack competing stereo imagers before a Transform-to-mono check. Format choice (AU vs VST3) does not replace polarity or delay match.
6. Only then residual spectral repair
If a stereo bed must stay stereo and mono still hollows a band after polarity, delay, Transform honesty, and Mix Engine / FX hygiene, PHIXER can help. Prove with Transform-to-mono A/B.
Studio One path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Mix Engine FX on bus/Master | Huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass/simplify Mix Engine; center lows |
| Transform to mono on Master | Returns / buses hollow | Polarity; quieter stereo FX Sends |
| Stereo FX Channel returns | Dry+wet hollow Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return lows |
| AU/VST3 widener on Group | Image vs fold fight | Bypass imager; Transform mono proof |
| Export / livestream fold | Fine in console, hollow on phone | YouTube mono / Transform mono habit |
Studio One checklist (to export or stream)
1. Keep a Transform-to-mono / Master mono toggle
Make mono-check muscle memory before bounce or livestream. Do not trust console headphones alone.
2. Audit Mix Engine FX under mono
Bypass Mix Engine FX during the check. If mono recovers, the Mix Engine settings are the problem, not "needing more width."
3. Audit FX Channels muted vs open
Find which stereo return eats Mid. Lower Send level or simplify the return.
4. Re-check after bus or Mix Engine rebuilds
New parallel buses and Mix Engine changes alter polarity and latency. Invert and Transform to mono again after you commit.
When PHIXER helps in Studio One
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (stereo Event, stereo bus print, stereo FX bed).
- Polarity, delay align, Transform honesty, Mix Engine FX, and FX Channel levels are cleaned up, but mono still hollows a band.
- You can A/B Transform-to-mono with PHIXER bypassed and hear clearer body or Mid without wrecking the image.
- You are not using it to replace Channel polarity, Event nudge, or to rescue extreme Mix Engine / widener settings.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Body thins when Transform to mono engages | Polarity; quieter stereo FX Sends | Fold reveals Side-only energy |
| Mix Engine FX on = thin mono | Bypass/simplify Mix Engine | Color/width tool, not polarity fix |
| FX Channel open hollows Mid | Lower Send; mono-safe return | Dry+wet fold |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed (AU/VST3) | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono Event alone is dull | Tone / EQ / gain / Event choice | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not Transform-to-mono / Master-mono auditioned yet.
- The fix is obviously polarity, Event nudge, quieter FX Send, or simpler Mix Engine FX.
- You want PHIXER to make the console wider or "more Studio One." Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Transform to mono on Master → polarity on dual paths → delay-align secondary (not Haas) → honest Mix Engine FX → FX Channel hygiene → AU/VST3 widener bypass for proof → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → fold again before export or stream.
